ACA Marketplace vs. Private PPO

Which health insurance route fits you?

As a licensed broker I sell both. The right path depends on your income, health, and how much flexibility you need. Here’s the honest, side-by-side breakdown for 2026 — plus a 30-second tool that points you to the better fit.

Government Marketplace

ACA / Obamacare

Best for subsidy-eligible households & anyone with ongoing care

Subsidies
Yes — premium tax credit if income is 100–400% of FPL (2026: ~$15,960–$63,840 single; ~$33,000–$132,000 family of 4)
Health questions
None — guaranteed issue, cannot be denied
Pre-existing
Covered in full, no waiting period
Benefits
10 essential health benefits, out-of-pocket caps
Networks
Often HMO/EPO; narrower doctor lists
Enrollment
Open enrollment Nov 1–Jan 15, plus qualifying life events

Note for 2026: the enhanced ARPA subsidies expired, so the 400%-of-FPL “cliff” is back — above it you get no subsidy. If your income is under ~400% FPL, this is almost always the cheaper route.

Off-Exchange / Private Market

Private PPO

Best for higher incomes, self-employed & broad-network needs

Subsidies
No — you pay full premium (income isn’t a factor)
Health questions
ACA-compliant PPO: none. Short-term plans: yes (underwritten)
Pre-existing
ACA-compliant PPO: covered. Short-term: often excluded
Benefits
ACA PPO: full. Short-term: limited, lower caps
Networks
Large PPO networks, more specialists, nationwide access
Enrollment
Year-round — no enrollment window required

Strong fit for business owners and 1099 contractors earning above 400% FPL (no subsidy to lose), anyone who wants specific doctors, or those bridging a gap between jobs.

Which route fits you? ~1 minute

Tell me your household details and I’ll compute whether the ACA Marketplace or a Private PPO saves you more — using real 2026 FPL subsidy limits.

1. Who needs coverage?
3. Annual household income
$

This decides subsidy eligibility. 2026 FPL = $15,960 + $5,680 per extra person; premium tax credits apply up to 400% of FPL.

4. Your health
5. Work situation
6. Where should I send your results?

Your recommendation and household details go straight to Yasmany. We never sell your information.

This is a general guide, not enrollment advice. I’ll confirm exact eligibility and pricing on our call.

Common questions

Answers before you ask.

Are the prices the same as on Healthcare.gov?

Yes. As a licensed broker I quote the exact same ACA plans and premiums you'd find on the federal Marketplace. The difference: I compare every carrier side by side and apply your subsidy automatically.

Do I qualify for a $0 or low-cost plan?

Many people do. ACA subsidies (premium tax credits) scale with household income and family size. People earning roughly 150–250% of the Federal Poverty Level often see premiums drop to $0–$10/month after subsidies. Answer the quick form and I'll show you your number.

When can I enroll?

ACA Open Enrollment runs November 1 – January 15 each year. Outside that window you can still enroll if you have a qualifying life event: losing job-based coverage, moving, marriage, divorce, a new baby, turning 26, or income changes.

What's the difference between ACA and private PPO?

ACA (Marketplace) plans are subsidized and guaranteed-issue, with income-based tax credits. Private PPO plans are off-marketplace, often with wider doctor networks, but without subsidies. I'll show you both so you can compare total cost vs. network.

Is there a cost to use a broker?

No. Brokers are compensated by the insurance carriers, not by you. You never pay more for a plan by using a broker — and you get free help with enrollment, claims, and annual reviews.

Which states are you licensed in?

We're licensed and helping clients across 45+ states. Enter your ZIP in the quote form and we'll confirm the best carrier options available where you live.
